Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
