Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.
International terror listing and prosecution case
Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.
German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.
Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.
Court proceedings and cross-border allegations
Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.
In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.
Historical background and organizational structure
Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.
Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.
Previous convictions and global responses
A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.
America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.
“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
