Key Takeaways after the Champions Cup's Initial Set of Fixtures

Following the opening salvo of the 2025-26 Champions Cup in the books, we explore the key revelations highlighted by the games.

French dominance has been the narrative in recent seasons, with the last five champions all hailing from France's top flight. However, the opening round included several statement victories from new contenders.

Bordeaux Look Set to Go Back-to-Back

Current holders Bordeaux Begles were utterly dominant in the competition a year ago, overpowering Toulouse in the semi-final and then Northampton in the final.

Positioned sixth in the Top 14, questions have been asked about their ability to repeat the title this year. Yet, in round one, Bordeaux issued a reminder that they are more than capable of securing consecutive championships with a points-laden away victory in South Africa.

Faced with a tough assignment at Loftus Versfeld against a powerful Bulls side including internationals like Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard, and Canan Moodie, they went into the break down 33-22 at half-time.

However, true to their champion status, they displayed their class in the second half, storming back to claim a 46-33 victory – shutting out the Bulls without a point after the interval.

French try-scoring aces Damian Penaud and star wing Louis Bielle-Biarrey were among the try-scorers. Any team with those two on the flanks has a chance against any opponent.

Powerful Bath Appear Equipped of Going the Distance

Bath's only triumph in the Champions Cup dates back almost a generation ago. Since that time, they have perhaps not been more strongly positioned to secure another title.

The defending English Premiership champions are top of the pile domestically after six games and will be hoping to transfer that success into Europe – especially after a shocking early departure the previous season.

Johann van Graan's side looked a very complete and polished team in their 40-14 win over Munster, who are among the leaders in the Celtic league.

They combine creative spark – securing the try-scoring point in under 20 minutes at the Rec – with resolute defending, keeping their visitors at a distance when they threatened a dramatic comeback.

With stars such as Finn Russell and Ben Spencer pulling the strings and strength in depth throughout the team, they must be viewed as serious contenders for a first European trophy since 1998.

Bath's defining match in the initial phase the previous year came in the following week, an agonising 22-21 defeat at Benetton with a changed side.

Now with a domestic championship under their belt and leading the home league, Van Graan might decide to put a heightened focus on the Champions Cup this season.

Glasgow Give Sale a Tough Start

The tournament contains quality outfits everywhere you look, but the first group seems destined to be one of the most competitive.

In the competition's present structure, a lot is emphasized regarding securing home wins, which is why Glasgow's win on the road at Sale on Friday evening might just prove crucial.

The Glasgow Warriors were 14-0 down after 20 minutes but fought back impressively, and two tries early in the second period gave them a precious maximum haul.

By achieving this, they gave their hopes of advancing a major lift and, by contrast, inflicted a hefty blow to their opponents.

With Toulouse – commanding 56-19 conquerors of the Sharks – and Saracens, who comfortably defeated Clermont, also in the pool, we are likely to see high-stakes drama.

And what of Glasgow's traditional foes Edinburgh? They produced one of their best European performances in recent memory to stun three-time winners Toulon 33-20, on a successful weekend for rugby in Scotland.

Is Ioane the Key Addition of the Leinster Quest?

If there's one team you would fancy to be in the mix at the business end of the season in Europe, it would be European giants Leinster.

However in recent campaigns it has ended in disappointment, as they have shown great potential but delivered little. Beaten finalists three years in a row between 2022-24, they looked overwhelming favourites the previous campaign after following up a 62-0 mauling of Harlequins in the round of 16 with a 52-0 win over Glasgow in the last eight.

It was believed that All Black star Jordie Barrett would be the missing ingredient to secure the title, but they were surprised and experienced a stunning upset to Northampton Saints in the last four.

Now they are bringing in another Kiwi, this time with Rieko Ioane, who provided a key pass on his first appearance in Saturday's 45-28 win over Harlequins.

Is Ioane the man to return the cup to Ireland for the first time since 2018?

Stormers Seem Equipped to Compete

From the moment the SA franchises became part of the Champions Cup in 2022-23, the best performance by any of them is the quarter-finals, and last year no South African side succeeded in getting out of the group stage, with often rotated sides selected.

Will this be the campaign that is different? The Stormers are top of the URC and kicked off their continental journey with a 26-17 triumph in France at Bayonne on Friday.

The post-match comments were positive too, with individuals involved talking about their aspirations, and the players such as South African internationals Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse not involved for the opening victory.

The Stormers seem the most likely contender for a South African side to have a long run in the competition, although don't count out the Sharks and Bulls, who each suffered defeat in their first games but did meet the French powerhouses respectively.

Saints and Pau Produce a Memorable Match

There were several candidates for game of the weekend, and the Northampton vs. Pau game was right up there.

Pau have been having a brilliant campaign, guided by Argentine internationals Julian Montoya and Facundo Isa and veteran playmaker Dan Robson.

They are presently second in the Top 14 and the crowd was raucous at the Stade du Hameau|their home ground|Pau's
