Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not immediately offer further details.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Recent Developments
This event takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Key events preceding this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
